Whether you’re moving to Denmark to study or to live permanently, you will need a reliable internet connection. The most fundamental citizen forms and applications are completed online via council (kommune) websites. This makes having a steady and safe internet connection vital to setting yourself up in Denmark.

Researching and comparing internet providers is a long and tedious process, even in your native country. Most internet providers’ websites are in Danish, which makes the process even more time consuming. However, if you are really confused, there is often a helpful English-speaking consultant in-store or over the phone that you can ask.

This guide has been created to help you choose the best internet provider that suits your current needs and internet requirements. Purchasing a broadband package in your home country may be very different to Denmark, so it is important to look at all the options and small details to ensure you are getting the best deal.

Broadband pricing

The price of broadband dependends on the speed, type of broadband you want and what possibilites you have where you live. Above we have created a unique tool, which you can use to find all the broadband-possibilities where you live.

At billig-bredbånd.nu we areon a daily basis monitoring the broadband prices and from our seach tool we get thousands of fresh searches on difference adresses in Denmark. From this data we can calculate the average broadband prices for each month and the development i shown below.

The graph shows the broadbrand prices for different speed-levels, and as you can see, the price typically gets higher, the faster broadband you need.

From the graph, we can see that since the beginning of 2025, the prices of internet speeds below 500 Mbit have dropped quite a bit, and therefore now might be a good time to buy internet. Internet with speeds above 500 Mbit also saw a significant drop in price during the summer, but has since returned to more “normal” price levels.

One of the main reasons why internet and broadband prices have dropped is the introduction of 5G internet solutions for home use, which really entered the Danish market in 2025. 5G provides speeds that in some cases can match fiber, and therefore fiber broadband providers have been forced to lower their prices, since 5G is generally a bit cheaper than fiber.

We will continue tracking internet prices, and you can always return to this page to see whether now is the right time to buy broadband or not. The average prices shown in the graph are normal prices and are not affected by introductory offers.

Keep in mind that you might need to look at different providers to get a price that is similar between 1000 and 500 Mbit, but typically this will be easy to find if you use our tool above. Here you will quickly see if a provider is offering 500 Mbit for 299 while another one is offering 1000 Mbit at the same price.

The prices offcourse depends on the type of broadband you want, and COAX is as an example often cheaper than Fiber.

Types of broadband in Denmark

Fixed broadband, which is an internet connection that is sent directly to your router, is the most common way to access the internet in Denmark. There are 3 main types of fixed broadband connections; fibre, digital subscriber line (DSL), and COAX. After setting up your router, you simply connect your device via WiFi and you will have internet access. However, let’s discuss the different broadband options that are offered in Denmark:

Fibre broadband

Fibre internet (bredbånd via fiber) is considered the fastest and most effective option to obtain access to the internet. The data is sent through fibre optic wires, which is currently the quickest and most efficient way to deliver data.

The main limitation of fibre internet, is that it is not available throughout the whole of Denmark. Fibre optic cables need to be present in the surrounding ground for an internet connection to be possible. If there aren’t any existing wires and the demand is not high enough, then it is likely that fibre optic internet will not be possible.

Another drawback is that fibre optic wires are very fragile, making them extemely delicate during roadworks or building renovations. However, if you are looking for a super-fast connection, fiber internet is your best option.

5G broadband

Broadband using the mobile broadband network, has become increasingly popular with the introduction of 5G, which offers significantly higher speeds than the previous 4G. 5G is easy to set up and it basically only requires a power cord to get started. It’s plug and play, and in areas where there is not fiber, 5G is becoming the preferred option.

The speed of 5G is however very dependent on a couple of factors:

1. The distance to the nearest 5G tower
2. The amount of other people using the 5G network at the same time
3. If you are living in a house or in an apartment complex

5G needs to travel through the air, and the further you live from a 5G tower the further the signal needs to travel, thus losing speed on the way. In addition, if a lot of people are using the signal at the same time in your area, this will also decrease the overall speed. Lastly, if you live in a large apartment complex with thick walls and multiple apartments above you, the signal will have a harder time reaching you, and thus you will experience lower speeds than if you live in a regular house with less obstruction of the signal.

The best you can do is to test your address to see how fast 5G is in your area and make a decision based on this. You can use our test above as it also includes 5G operators.

Broadband via telephone-cable

In the past the most common type of connection was DSL or bredbånd via telefonstik. This connection uses an existing telephone line to connect to the internet. This type of connection is slower than fibre but is a more affordable and accessible option.

DSL uses existing copper wiring which transmits data, providing a reliable and stable connection. Copper wiring is not as quick at transmitting data as fibre optic… but they are less delicate, and it is unlikely that you would experience interruptions during roadworks. The set-up is relatively easy, and even rural areas of the country are able to access the internet.

DSL is slowly beeing discontinued in Denmark, and therefore it is not an option you should consider.

COAX broadband

Lastly, there is COAX connection (bredbånd via kabel), which is a connection delivered by TV cables. The speed of this type of broadband is faster than DSL but slower than fibre optic.  Coaxial wiring uses a high bandwidth, giving it decent speed results. However, fibre optic cables have an even better bandwidth capacity – making it the next best option in terms of speed.

This option is a solid choice if there are high capacity users or multiple users at the same time. The only drawback of this type of internet is that you need to have an existing TV signal, which may not be readily available in all student dorms, apartments or homes. Although if you have a TV cable and want a reliable internet connection, this is a great option to consider.

The internetproviders do not cover all of Denmark, and if you test you adress above, you will quickly find out that typically only a few of them can deliver internet where you live. Depending on the provider, it is also diffferent which technologies they offer on your adresse. Some might only offer a DSL connection where you live while other might be able to offer you fiber internet.

In case one on can deliver internet on your adresss, you always have the option of choosing a 4/5 G solution, where you get internet through a router that connects to the general 4G or 5G network. With this type of internet you can often get up to 100 Mbit/s in download-speed.

Choosing the right speed for your broadband

The speed you require depends on what you will be using your internet connection for. It’s worth considering how fast you need your broadband to be, in order to avoid paying for a super fast connection if you don’t really need it.

If you use your broadband to browse social media, stream TV programmes/films, and check emails, then a super fast connection is not fully required. However, if you find yourself downloading large files on a daily basis, or you live in an area where connection speeds are slower, then it may be worth looking into faster broadband packages.

Things to remember when choosing your broadband

Installation fees

After you have decided which type of broadband you want, you should consider a few other points before fully commiting and sigining a contract. The cost you see advertised by internet providers is the monthly price, or subscription fee, which is what you would pay for monthly usage.

There will most likely be an initial set-up fee which will include: the price of the router and any cables or equipment, fee for home installation, and sometimes an admin fee. The price and conditions of this fee can vary between providers, just make sure to read the fine print to avoid any surprises or additional costs.

Advertised speed vs actual speed

Most companies will promise super-fast speeds which can entice you, and leave you disappointed when the actual speed is much less. It’s important to check your area for accurate coverage, and most providers will be able to tell you their connection speeds if you give them your address.

The variance in speed can depend on a few factors such as how busy the connection is and the location of your router within your home. By researching coverage in your area, you will have a better idea of which providers can deliver the best, and most reliable, internet connection.

Payment

You can usually set up a direct debit for your broadband internet payments. This requires a bank account for the balance to be debited from. Alternatively, you can make monthly payments to the provider when you receive your invoice. Or you can send the outstanding balance via MobilePay. There is usually more information on payment on the invoice but if you are in doubt, contact your internet provider.

Conditions for termination and delivery and return of equipment

Change of address

It is also important to consider other practical aspects of your life when deciding on a broadband connection. For example, when you move accomodation you must notify your local council. Your municipality will notify most of the organisations associated with you and your details.

However, your council may not notify your internet provider. You should then ensure that you notify your provider directly about your change of address. It is also recommended to discuss the possiblilties and/or costs of moving with your existing router.

Cancellation

Due to the nature of cancellation terms, it is difficult to give solid, concrete, advice. It is highly recommended that you carefully read your provider’s cancellation conditions and any other requirments they may have, e.g. return of the router or other equipment.

Combining broadband and other services

It is common for broadband providers to offer some sort of broadband package that is combined with an additional service.

For example, broadband internet with 6 months free subscription to ViaPlay. Other providers are offering internet with the addition of TV and sports channels for as little as 99 kroner. If you don’t use much TV or streaming, then perhaps consider internet packages that include discounted access to Spotify or even Microsoft Office.

There are a lot more options out there, and combining addtional services has become one of the ways in which providers can offer competitive deals and prices.

It is certainly an aspect worth researching, as you can save money and get a good deal that works for you. Of course, if you have no interest in additional services, it will be cheaper to choose a more basic package with broadband only.

Best ISP in Denmark

There are several ISP´s (Internet Service Providers) in Denmark, and thus choosing the right one and also the best one can be difficult.

The best you can do is to look behind special offers and focus on your needs and the price you will pay after the initial offer period, as this is what you generally will be paying.

Also, it can be a good idea to choose a IPS that do not have a minimum contract period. Some ISP´s have a contract period of six months while other only have one month. If you choose a ISP with a contract period of one month, you will be able to get another ISP quickly if it turns out, that it was not the right solution for you after all.

Also, when finding the right ISP for your, it can be helpful to look at Trustpilot. Does the ISP have good reviews, or does it struggle with providing its customers with the right service?

Generally, the ISP market in Denmark is very dynamic and new providers pop up all the time offering new and cheaper solutions. Therefore, it is always a good idea to regularly check your address to see which ISP´s can provide internet at your place.

How is the broadband market in Denmark structured?

As the relatively long list of ISPs in Denmark suggests, the telecommunications market in Denmark is characterised by a high degree of competition between providers. This situation can be traced back to the liberalisation of the telecom market in the 1990s, when the companies that owned telecom infrastructure, principally the former national telecom company TDC, were obliged to allow competitors to use their networks.

The political goal of ensuring high-quality and low-priced telecommunication services has continued to rank high in Denmark, largely due to the country’s digital ambitions and the corresponding need to have a high rate of access to high-speed internet among the population. In 2018, the fibre network in Denmark was liberalised, meaning that the company you pay for your internet service (your ISP) does not necessarily own the cables that make the service possible.

Who owns the network?

TDC NET owns the lion’s share of the Danish broadband infrastructure. It manages the telephone cable network, connecting 2.8 million addresses with copper cables, and connects 1.5 million addresses with COAX or fibre cables, of which over 380,000 are fibre (a rapidly increasing figure).

Norlys, which is both an energy and telecom company, is also a big player in the COAX and fibre networks. Its fiber cables are responsible for a significant proportion of the addresses in Jutland currently part of the fibre network.

GlobalConnect, which operates across the Nordic countries and in Germany, also has a share of the fibre network, as do several local energy companies and companies comprising conglomerations of energy companies, notably Fibia and EWII.

The role of ISPs

The telecom and internet sector in Denmark is regulated by the Danish Business Authority. According to the legislation that puts into effect the liberalisation of the broadband and fibre networks, companies wishing to act as ISPs can rent the use of the networks from network service providers at cost price. In other words, they can sell subscriptions for consumers to use the internet without the huge investments necessary to build and maintain a network.

While competition between providers is a feature of the Danish ISP landscape, another is that many providers are owned by parent companies, some of which are network service providers, and some of which own several ISP companies. For example, Jetnet is owned by Fastspeed, Kviknet is owned by EWII, and YouSee and Hiper are owned by Nuuday (Formerly TDC Group).
